What to know

What to know before you apply in Melbourne

What does education support mean in Victoria?

The Department of Education describes the education support class as a diverse group covering school administration and operations, school support services such as library and laboratory, and direct student and teaching support, which includes classroom assistance to teachers. Positions sit on ranges inside level 1. At range 1 the duties include routine support for teachers, providing a child safe environment in accordance with the Child Safe Standards, and basic physical and emotional care for students. Range 2 adds coordinated support to teachers and educational programs and medical intervention support to a student. Job ads use education assistant, education aide, integration aide or learning support officer for similar work, so the title tells you less than the duties do.

Where are Melbourne teachers aide jobs advertised?

Victorian government school roles, including education support class vacancies, are listed on the Victorian Government's School Jobs Vic page. Catholic and independent schools advertise through their own sites and networks. Greater Melbourne is wide, so your commute matters: the Victorian Skills Authority figures behind the Government's education aide page list worker numbers for six Melbourne regions separately. CrossNation lists a role only when an employer briefs us, so use School Jobs Vic for government schools and register with us for roles we are briefed on.

What checks apply to Melbourne school roles?

Victoria uses the Working with Children Check, applied for through Service Victoria with two identity documents. The Victorian Government says the Act lets most people begin child-related work while a Check is assessed, with an exception for working in a service regulated under the Education and Care Services National Law (Victoria), so ask whether a role in a preschool or outside school hours care program falls under it. The Department's role descriptions refer to the Child Safe Standards, so ask the school what it needs from you and when. First aid certificates, including HLTAID011, are not stated as a requirement on the pages we read, but many schools value them.

How do you qualify, and what does it pay?

The national entry-level qualification is CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support, which has no entry requirements and needs at least 100 hours of work in a classroom catering to primary or secondary students. The Department's policy library lists the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022, and a new agreement for Victorian government school staff was in the approval process in August 2026, so ask the school or check the Department for the agreement in force. We do not print Victorian government pay figures, because the agreement's tables are not reproduced on the pages we read. For a non-government school, the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award [MA000076] may apply, and our teachers aide pay guide shows its minimums with the date they apply from. Check Fair Work for the latest rates.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is an education assistant in Victoria?

The Department of Education groups non-teaching school staff into the education support class. Direct student and teaching support, such as classroom assistance to teachers, is one part of it, and job ads call these roles education assistant, education aide or integration aide.

Where do I find government school teachers aide jobs in Melbourne?

School Jobs Vic lists Victorian government school vacancies, including education support class roles. CrossNation lists a role only when an employer briefs us, so use both.

Do I need a certificate III to work as an education assistant?

Not always. CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support has no entry requirements and is the national entry qualification, but schools decide what they ask for. Read the position description for each role.

Can I start work before my Working with Children Check comes through?

The Victorian Government says most people can start child-related work while a Check is assessed, but not in a service regulated under the Education and Care Services National Law (Victoria). A school may also ask for your clearance earlier, so apply before you accept a start date.
