What job seekers ask

What to know before you start

Which credentials do employers ask for?

Many practices and businesses ask for a degree and membership of CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ or the Institute of Public Accountants, while bookkeeping and payroll roles often value software experience over membership. Put your qualification, membership status and the systems you use at the top of your CV so screeners see them quickly.

How does a skills assessment work?

Three bodies assess accounting occupations for migration: Chartered Accountants ANZ, CPA Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants. The accounting Professional Year Program was developed by all three. In a Chartered Accountants ANZ assessment, Australian tax law is compulsory only for the Taxation Accountant occupation. An assessment is evidence about your skills and not a visa.

What does the market look like?

The ABS counts financial and insurance services job vacancies at 10.2 thousand in August 2026, against 10.5 thousand a year earlier, with a six-quarter range of 8.9 to 12.4 thousand. The industry covers banks and insurers, so accounting roles in other industries are not counted. Read it as background.

What if you are overseas?

Overseas candidates need the right to work in Australia, and most employers prefer local experience or a completed skills assessment. CrossNation cannot promise a job, visa or timeline. A registered migration agent can advise on your route.
