Disability support jobs in Australia

Disability support workers help people with disability to live, work and take part in their community, in homes, group homes and community settings. What job seekers ask

What to know before you start

What does a disability support worker do?

The work is practical and personal: helping with daily routines, meals, medication prompts where trained, getting out in the community and building skills the participant has chosen. Shifts can be mornings, evenings, weekends and sleepovers, and some roles need a driver's licence. The qualification most providers ask for is a Certificate III in Individual Support with a disability specialisation, though some accept experience and will train the right person.

What do you need before you can start?

Workers in risk-assessed roles for a registered NDIS provider need an NDIS Worker Screening Check. It is issued by the screening unit in your state or territory, and in NSW it is valid for 5 years and can be used across Australia with any NDIS employer. Apply early, because you cannot work a risk-assessed role until it is cleared. First aid and CPR certificates are commonly asked for as well, and a provider will say what it needs.

What is the pay?

Most disability support work is covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award unless the provider has an enterprise agreement. The table above shows the award minimum for a level 2 disability care home care employee at the pay point stated. It is a minimum, not an average, and penalty rates and allowances apply for evenings, weekends and sleepovers. Use the Fair Work Pay Calculator with your real shifts.

What if you are coming from overseas?

Candidates from overseas usually need work rights before they can start, and an employer may need to be approved to sponsor. Our guide for care and disability workers explains the general picture. CrossNation cannot promise a job, a visa or a start date. If you are already in Australia, check what your current visa allows before you accept any role.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NDIS Worker Screening Check to be a support worker?

If you work in a risk-assessed role for a registered NDIS provider, yes. The provider decides which roles are risk assessed. Apply through your state or territory screening unit.

What qualification do I need?

Providers often list a disability-focused Certificate III, yet some weigh relevant experience instead. The position description tells you what that provider needs.

What is the award pay for support workers?

The Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award [MA000100] sets the minimum unless an enterprise agreement applies. The table above shows a level 2 rate read from the award.

Are there disability support jobs in regional areas?

Yes, services exist across Australia. Check the live listings above for current locations.

How do I register with CrossNation?

Create a candidate profile and upload your CV, with your NDIS Worker Screening Check status, first aid certificate and driver's licence if you have them. Recruiters look at profiles when a provider briefs us on a role.

Can I apply if I am new to Australia?

You need the right to work in Australia and any screening clearance before a risk-assessed role. CrossNation cannot promise a job or a visa. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
