FIFO and mining support recruitment for Australian employers

CrossNation recruits for fly-in fly-out and mining support roles across Australia, including operators, maintenance staff and camp and site services. A placement through us is a direct hire: the worker becomes your employee. We also source sponsorship-ready overseas candidates, and our candidate pool is more than 200 candidates in aggregate across nursing, aged care, chefs and FIFO and mining roles.

Official data

Key facts from official sources

Which award applies

Minimum pay for mining work without an enterprise agreement is set by a modern award, for example the Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000011] or the Black Coal Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000001]. Which one applies depends on the work and the employer.

What employers ask

What to know before you start

What belongs in a FIFO brief?

Roster and location come first: the swing length, the flight or drive-in point, and whether the camp provides accommodation. Then the site induction, medical and licence requirements, which your site and the state regulator set, not us. Say who pays for travel and when a new starter is paid from. We record each candidate's tickets, licences and recent site experience against your list, so your team can verify them before offering.

Which award and pay rules apply?

Without an enterprise agreement, mining pay is set by a modern award such as the Mining Industry Award or the Black Coal Mining Industry Award, and which one applies depends on the work. Many sites run enterprise agreements instead. Read the instrument that covers the role before you fix a salary, because allowances, roster loadings and overtime often decide the real cost of a FIFO position more than the base rate.

Why does the labour hire order matter to a direct hire?

Under a regulated labour hire arrangement order, an employer that supplies workers to a host must pay at least the protected rate for the work done at that host. The Mining and Energy Union filed three such applications with the Fair Work Commission on 11 October 2024. These orders concern workers supplied through another employer. A direct placement through a recruitment agency is different, because the person you hire is your own employee, but you should take advice on how your arrangements are classified.

Can you place overseas workers in FIFO roles?

We can source sponsorship-ready overseas candidates for trades and FIFO roles where their skills assessment and licences line up with the position. The employer holds or obtains its own approval. Our trades and FIFO guide explains the general employer steps, and licence recognition for trades usually takes longer than the visa conversation, so raise it in your first brief.

Tell us the role, location and start date

The fee is 12% of the candidate's annual salary, charged only when a placement succeeds.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a recruitment agency placement the same as a labour hire arrangement?

No. With a placement, the candidate is employed by you. With a supply arrangement, another business employs the worker and sends them to you. Different rules apply, so get advice on your own set-up.

Which mining awards exist?

The Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000011] and the Black Coal Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000001] are two. Coverage depends on the work and the employer, and enterprise agreements are common.

Can you recruit camp catering and support staff as well as operators?

Yes. Cooks, housekeeping, stores and site administration roles are part of the brief. Tell us the camp and roster.

Which states do you recruit FIFO staff for?

CrossNation recruits for employers in every state and territory. Share the site location and the point workers fly or drive in from.

What does FIFO recruitment cost?

Our fee is 12% of the candidate's annual salary and applies only if a placement succeeds, and each placement carries a 90-day placement guarantee. Flights, camp accommodation, site inductions and medicals are separate costs, and roster allowances change the real cost of a position.

Can CrossNation sponsor overseas mining workers?

No. The employer sponsors. Trades and FIFO roles usually involve a skills assessment and a state licence alongside any visa, and your registered migration agent advises on the visa. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
