What to know

What to know before you apply in Adelaide

What is a school services officer?

The South Australian Department for Education says a school services officer provides administration and classroom support in government schools and preschools. SSOs are one of four ancillary groups, next to Aboriginal community education officers, early childhood workers and government services employees. If you search for teachers aide jobs in Adelaide, the government equivalent is the classroom SSO, while independent and Catholic schools use their own titles such as teacher aide, classroom assistant or learning support assistant. Start by deciding whether you want classroom support in a school, or an early childhood program in a preschool or school-based preschool, because the entry rules differ between the two.

What must you do before a South Australian school hires you?

The Department lists mandatory requirements for ancillary and support roles. You need proof of your right to work, a current application on the employable ancillary register, full-day Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect education and care training kept current, a current general Working with Children Check with a volunteer check not valid for paid work, and an authority to work letter. A person can be recommended for a position but is not cleared to start until every requirement is verified. Non-permanent staff must keep their online registration current, update minimum requirements as they expire and submit a new application each year.

What extra rules apply in early childhood programs?

All early childhood workers and school services officers who are primary contact staff in early childhood programs must hold an approved early childhood qualification. The Department's minimum includes a certificate III in children's services or education support, or actively working towards one, and primary contact staff in department preschool occasional care or rural care programs need at least a diploma. Foundations of child safety training must be completed before starting in an early childhood education and care service. First aid is not a requirement for ancillary employment, but the Department suggests HLTAID012, or HLTAID011 plus approved anaphylaxis and asthma training, for school-based preschool roles because not having it may limit your opportunities.

Which agreement sets the pay, and what does it cost to apply?

The Department's pay page lists school services officer pay rates under the South Australian school and preschool education staff enterprise agreement 2024 and publishes the rates in a PDF. We did not print the amounts because that document could not be opened on the day, so use the Department's page. The South Australian Working with Children Check costs $145 for employees and $73.50 for tertiary students, and the fee is not returned. Non-government schools may instead be covered by the national schools general staff award, and our teachers aide pay guide shows its minimums. Greater Adelaide had 81,431 children aged 5 to 9 (5.9%) at the 2021 Census.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a school services officer the same as a teachers aide?

In South Australian government schools the SSO provides administration and classroom support, so classroom SSO roles are the ones job seekers mean by teachers aide. Other schools use teacher aide, classroom assistant or learning support assistant.

What is the employable ancillary register?

It is the Department for Education's register. A current application on it is a mandatory requirement for ancillary and support roles, and non-permanent staff must keep their registration current and submit a new application each year.

Do I need a certificate III to be an SSO?

The Department's minimum applies to primary contact staff in early childhood programs: a certificate III in children's services or education support, or actively working towards an approved qualification. General requirements are listed on the Department's page.

Can I use a volunteer Working with Children Check?

No. The Department says a volunteer Check is not valid for paid employment. The SA fee is $145 for employees, and the page says the application fee is not returned.

Do I need first aid training to work as an SSO?

The Department says first aid is not required for ancillary employment, but suggests HLTAID012, or HLTAID011 with approved anaphylaxis and asthma training, for school-based preschool roles because not having it may limit your employment opportunities.
