Official data

Key facts from official sources

Which award applies

Minimum pay for mining work without an enterprise agreement is set by a modern award, for example the Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000011] or the Black Coal Mining Industry Award 2020 [MA000001]. Which one applies depends on the work and the employer.

What job seekers ask

What to know before you start

How does a roster work?

FIFO rosters are swings of days on site followed by days at home, and the length varies by employer. The employer sets the flight or drive-in point, and the camp provides accommodation and meals. Ask about the swing, the travel arrangements and who pays for flights before you accept. A long swing suits some lives and not others.

What pay rules apply?

Where there is no enterprise agreement, minimum pay comes from a modern award, for example the Mining Industry Award or the Black Coal Mining Industry Award, depending on the work. Many sites pay under enterprise agreements with allowances and roster loadings. Read the agreement or award named in your contract. Mining had 11.0 thousand job vacancies in August 2026, according to the ABS, up from 8.6 thousand a year earlier.

What tickets, inductions and medicals do you need?

Employers and sites set inductions and medicals, and trades need the licence for the state where they work. Keep your licences, tickets and certificates current and ready to upload. Site experience helps, and recent work history should be on your CV with dates.

What if you are overseas?

Overseas candidates usually need work rights and, for trades, a skills assessment and state licence recognition. Our trades and FIFO guide explains the general steps. CrossNation cannot promise a job, a visa or a timeline. If you are already in Australia, check what your visa allows before you accept a role.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience to get a FIFO job?

Many mining and camp roles value site experience, but support roles such as catering and housekeeping can suit people new to the industry.

What is paid for a FIFO job?

It depends on the role, the award or agreement and the roster. Read the pay terms in the contract, including allowances.

Do I need a trade licence?

For regulated trades, yes, from the state regulator. Operators may need tickets the site specifies.

How do I register with CrossNation?

Create a candidate profile and upload a CV with your tickets, licences, last site and roster history. Recruiters match profiles to site and roster briefs as they arrive.

Can I work FIFO on a temporary visa?

It depends on the work rights your visa gives you and on the employer. CrossNation cannot promise a job or a visa. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
