Education assistant jobs, also advertised as teacher aide, teachers assistant, school learning support officer or school services officer jobs, support teachers and students in Australian schools. There is no national registration. Schools ask for a Working With Children Check or the state equivalent, and many value a Certificate III in School Based Education Support. Pay follows a state government instrument, the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award or an enterprise agreement.
There are no open teacher aide roles listed with CrossNation right now. New roles are added as employers brief us, so create a profile to be matched when one opens.
A teacher aide works in a school under the direction of a teacher and helps students learn. The Queensland Government describes the work as developing and obtaining resources, setting up and operating equipment, completing administrative tasks and supervising students. In a classroom that usually means running reading or maths groups a teacher has planned, supporting students who need extra help, and supervising the playground and excursions. Many roles involve students with disability, and the duties in New South Wales and Queensland role descriptions can include help with eating, toileting and personal care. Some roles include giving medication under a student's health care plan, with training provided. The award describes the work as assisting student learning, individually or in groups, under the supervision of a teacher.
Each state uses its own title for similar work. New South Wales public schools call it school learning support officer, Queensland uses teacher aide, Western Australia uses education assistant, South Australia uses school services officer, and Victoria groups classroom support in its education support class, with the Victorian Government's career pages using education aide. Independent and Catholic schools often advertise teacher aide, teachers assistant, integration aide or learning support assistant. The Fair Work award lists teacher aide, assistant and integration aide as the occupational equivalents of its classroom support grades, and ANZSCO lists the occupation as Teachers' Aide. Search for several titles, because the same work can appear under any of them.
There is no national licence. The usual entry qualification is CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support, which has no entry requirements, has 15 units (10 core and 5 elective) and needs at least 100 hours of work in a classroom catering to primary or secondary students. Schools decide what they require: the New South Wales statement of duties lists a certificate I, II or III in education support as desirable, while the Queensland role description lists a certificate III level qualification or equivalent skills among the key capabilities. Every state needs the working with children scheme for that state before you work with students, a paid-worker check rather than a volunteer one, and many schools ask for a current first aid certificate.
It depends on the employer. Government school staff are covered by state instruments, for example the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022 (a new agreement was in the approval process in August 2026, so check the Department), the Western Australian Teachers' Aides' Award 1979 with the Education Assistants' (Government) General Agreement 2025, and the Queensland General Employees (Queensland Government Departments) and Other Employees Award – State 2015. The Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award [MA000076] covers employers in the school education industry in classifications listed in its Schedule A, but it does not cover employees covered by an enterprise instrument or a state reference public sector award. Under the award, classroom support services grade 1 starts at level 1.3, grade 2 at level 2.1 and grade 3 at level 3.1. Our teachers aide pay guide shows the minimums and the date they apply from. Check Fair Work for the latest rates.
The award sets ordinary hours for full-time employees at 38 a week, and classroom support services staff work ordinary hours between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm on Monday to Friday. A part-time employee agrees a regular pattern in writing, including the number of weeks of the school year they will work. An employer can require leave without pay in non-term weeks if the contract says so in writing, and the award gives a formula to calculate an annual salary for those staff. A casual teacher aide is paid a 25% loading and at least two hours for each engagement. Ask any employer whether the role is permanent, part-time or casual, and whether you are paid during school holidays.
Government school roles are advertised through each state's education department: School Jobs Vic in Victoria, individual school websites for entry-level roles in Queensland, and the Edujobs system in South Australia, where you also need a place on the employable ancillary register. Non-government schools advertise their own roles. CrossNation lists a role only when an employer briefs us, so register, upload your CV and put your working with children check details, qualification or enrolment, first aid certificate and the student groups you have worked with at the top. A listing is not a job offer, and CrossNation cannot promise a job or a start date.
Registration: No national registration. The working with children check or equivalent for your state is required, and schools may ask for further training. Teacher aides are not registered with Ahpra or a teacher regulator. Schools set their own requirements, and every state has its own working with children scheme.
Pay and conditions: usually the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award [MA000076] or an enterprise agreement. Check current minimum rates with the Fair Work Pay Calculator.

In most job ads the two titles describe the same classroom support work. Western Australia's Department of Education uses education assistant, Queensland uses teacher aide, and other states use their own titles, so search for all of them and read the duties.

Yes, in every state you need the working with children check or blue card for the state where you work, and a volunteer check is generally not valid for paid work. The name, fee and rules differ by state, so see our teacher aide requirements guide.
