What job seekers ask

What to know before you start

Which licence do you need?

Licensing is state by state. In Victoria, Energy Safe Victoria licenses electrical workers and the Building and Plumbing Commission licenses plumbers and gasfitters, and other states have their own regulators. Energy Safe Victoria's page covers mutual recognition and gap training for people licensed elsewhere. Check the state where you plan to work.

What is a white card?

To work in the construction industry at any level you must have a general construction induction card, known as a white card. You get one by completing training with a registered training organisation. Sites may add their own inductions.

What if you trained overseas?

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) assesses trade skills for migration and recognition. A result gives the Australian qualification for non-licensed trades or an OTSR for licensed trades, and licensed trades still need a state licence before you can work. A registered migration agent can advise on visas, and CrossNation cannot promise a job or a visa.

What does the market look like?

Construction had 20.0 thousand job vacancies in August 2026, up from 19.5 thousand a year earlier. It covers the whole industry, not one trade.
