What to know

What to know before you apply in Sydney

What is an SLSO, and is it the same as a teachers aide?

In New South Wales public schools the teachers aide role is formally the School Learning Support Officer. The Department of Education statement of duties says SLSOs provide support for students with identified diverse learning needs, including disability, in classrooms and other learning environments, under the direction and supervision of a teacher. Catholic and independent schools in Sydney use their own titles, such as teacher aide, learning support assistant or classroom assistant, so search for all of them. The duties include assisting with school routines and classroom activities, preparing resources, recording student performance data, and helping students with eating, toileting and personal care. Read the position description for the student group, because a role in a mainstream classroom differs from one in a specialist setting.

Which SLSO streams and settings exist?

The statement of duties names four specific streams on top of the general SLSO role: pre-school, vision support, hearing support and bilingual. A pre-school SLSO must be working towards, or hold, an ACECQA-approved certificate III in children's services or early childhood education and care when appointed. Hearing support can involve supporting the student's hearing technologies and sign interpreting where needed, vision support involves producing braille and large print materials, and bilingual SLSOs help newly arrived students who are learning English as an additional language or dialect, including refugees. Check each vacancy for the stream, because the duties and the entry rules differ between them.

What checks and training does a Sydney school ask for?

The statement of duties lists Working With Children Check clearance as essential, along with mandatory training set by the Department and a willingness to complete first aid training relevant to the role. The Office of the Children's Guardian says a WWCC lasts five years and a volunteer check is not valid for paid work, so volunteers at a school need a paid-worker Check before they are employed. Health support training and training in administering medication are provided based on student needs, because the duties can include diabetes management and giving medication under a student's health care plan. Desirable items are a certificate I, II or III in education support, a first aid certificate and experience working with children with support needs.

Which award sets the pay in Sydney?

It depends on who employs you. The Department of Education handbook for non-teaching staff refers to the Crown Employees (School Administrative and Support Staff) Award, and the SLSO statement of duties refers to a health support allowance in that award. Non-government schools are generally covered by the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award [MA000076], unless an enterprise agreement covers the employee, because clause 4.4 excludes employees covered by an enterprise instrument. We show the national award minimums on our teachers aide pay guide with the date they apply from and a link to Fair Work. Check Fair Work for the latest rates, and ask the school which instrument applies before you sign.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a school learning support officer the same as a teachers aide?

In New South Wales public schools the formal title is School Learning Support Officer. Other schools and job ads use teacher aide, learning support assistant or education assistant for similar work, so search for all of them.

Do I need a certificate III to get a teachers aide job in Sydney?

The Department's statement of duties lists a certificate I, II or III in education support as desirable, not essential, for a general SLSO. A pre-school SLSO must hold or be working towards an approved certificate III in children's services or early childhood education and care. Other schools set their own rules.

Can I use a volunteer Working With Children Check for a paid job?

No. The Office of the Children's Guardian says a volunteer WWCC is not valid for paid work. Apply for a paid-worker Check, which lasts five years, and give the number to your employer.

Will the job include personal care or giving medication?

It can. The statement of duties includes helping students with toileting and personal care and giving medication under a student's health care plan, with health support and medication training provided based on student needs. Ask the school which student group you would work with.

Which award covers a teachers aide in a Sydney private school?

Often the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award [MA000076], unless an enterprise agreement covers the employee. Public school staff are covered by a NSW instrument instead. Check Fair Work for the latest rates and ask the employer in writing.
