What employers ask

What to know before you start

What do disability providers usually brief us on?

Most briefs name the setting first, because the work differs between a participant's own home, a group home and community outings. Then the shift pattern, whether the worker needs to drive, and any skills the participant's plan calls for, such as behaviour support, manual handling or medication assistance. Many providers ask for a Certificate III in Individual Support with a disability specialisation, but what a role requires is your call. We record what each candidate holds against your list so you can check it yourself.

What must be in place before a worker starts?

Workers in risk-assessed roles for a registered NDIS provider need an NDIS Worker Screening Check, and the provider is the one that decides which of its roles are risk assessed. The check is issued by the state or territory screening unit, and in NSW it is valid for 5 years and can be used across Australia with any NDIS employer. Ask candidates for their clearance or application status early, because you cannot roster an unscreened worker into a risk-assessed role. Each state and territory publishes its own application steps.

What will the wages cost?

Wages are separate from our recruitment fee. For most disability support work the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award sets the minimum, and the figure in the table above is the level 2 disability care entry rate at the pay point shown. Superannuation is paid on top, and penalty rates, allowances and sleepover provisions in the award change the real weekly cost of a roster. Use the Fair Work Pay Calculator to price a specific shift pattern before you set a salary.

Can you find overseas support workers?

Yes, alongside workers who are already here. An overseas candidate needs work rights before starting, and the employer, not CrossNation, holds or obtains any sponsorship approval. Our care and disability guide explains the general steps for employers. If a support worker is already in Australia with the right to work, the search is faster and you can check work rights before interview.

Tell us the role, location and start date

The fee is 12% of the candidate's annual salary, charged only when a placement succeeds.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does every disability support worker need an NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The check is compulsory for people in risk-assessed roles for registered NDIS providers. Registered providers decide which of their roles are risk assessed, so confirm yours with your state or territory screening unit.

Which award covers disability support workers?

In most cases the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award [MA000100], unless an enterprise agreement applies. Check which instrument covers your service.

Can you recruit for regional and remote services?

Yes, in every state and territory. For remote services, say whether the worker must drive, live locally or fly in, because that changes who can take the role.

Can you supply overseas disability support workers?

We can source sponsorship-ready overseas candidates for employers who want them, but CrossNation does not sponsor anyone or promise a visa. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

Do you also place staff into aged care?

Yes, aged care is a separate sector page with its own award and registration notes. Many providers run both services and brief us on both.

What does disability support worker recruitment cost?

Our fee is 12% of the candidate's annual salary and applies only if a placement succeeds, and each placement carries a 90-day placement guarantee. Wages under the award, superannuation, and any screening and orientation costs for new workers are separate costs that stay with you.
