What to know

What to know before you apply in Sydney

Which NSW licence do you need to work as an electrician?

The NSW Government says you need an electrical licence or certificate before doing any electrical wiring work in the state, regardless of the cost of the work and whether it is residential, commercial or industrial. Unlicensed electrical work can bring a fine of $22,000 for an individual or $110,000 for a company under the Home Building Act 1989. The licence types that apply are an individual contractor licence, a company or partnership contractor licence, a qualified supervisor certificate and a provisional tradesperson certificate. They can be issued for one, three or five years, except the provisional certificate, which runs for three years and cannot be renewed. Which one a role needs depends on the work and the employer, so read the job ad for the exact wording and ask the employer to confirm it.

What pathways lead to a NSW electrical licence?

Building Commission NSW lists several pathways and you need to meet all the requirements of one. The most common, Pathway A, is a completed Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician, a certificate of proficiency from the Vocational Training Review Panel of NSW, and at least 12 months of relevant electrical wiring experience that your referees confirm on the Referee's Statement form. The regulator may ask you to sit an assessment on the wiring rules AS/NZS 3000:2018. Someone who held a licence more than five years ago must complete the TAFE Digital re-licensing assessment. The experience has to be paid work under an award or enterprise agreement, and an apprentice cannot be issued a licence until the apprenticeship or traineeship is finished. Every individual applicant also needs a National Police Check no older than four months.

How does interstate recognition work for Sydney electricians?

NSW runs the East Coast Electrician's scheme for some licences from Queensland, Victoria and the ACT. A Queensland holder of an unrestricted electrical mechanic licence and an electrical contractor licence, an ACT unrestricted electrician's licence, or a Victorian electrician's licence held by someone who is also a registered electrical contractor can apply for a NSW endorsed contractor licence. A Queensland unrestricted electrical mechanic or a Victorian electrician can instead apply for a qualified supervisor certificate. If you move your primary place of residence to NSW you must apply for a NSW licence through the mutual recognition form. Going the other way, a NSW qualified supervisor certificate or endorsed contractor licence lets you work in Queensland and Victoria, although Victoria asks you to notify Energy Safe Victoria first.

What should overseas-trained electricians know about NSW?

NSW does not recognise overseas qualifications for its home building licences, so you must still show the required qualifications and experience. The route for licensed trades is Trades Recognition Australia's Offshore Skills Assessment Program, which issues an Offshore Technical Skills Record for Electrician (General) or Electrician (Special Class). With that record you may apply for a provisional tradesperson certificate, then complete Australian context gap training, a period of supervised employment and the Certificate III to apply for a full licence. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent. CrossNation cannot assess a qualification, promise a licence or promise a job.

What do Sydney employers have to do about apprentice supervision?

Since 1 September 2024 the Supervision Practice Standard has been a mandatory condition of a NSW electrician's licence. Only a licensed electrician can supervise electrical apprentices, and the standard sets ratios of one electrician to one apprentice under direct supervision, one to three under general supervision and one to five under broad supervision. An employer commits an offence by instructing an apprentice to do a task without the appropriate level of supervision. Electricians also submit certificates of compliance for electrical work through the BCNSW eCert portal, so familiarity with that system is useful on a CV.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence to do electrical work in Sydney?

Yes. NSW requires an electrical licence or certificate before any electrical wiring work, whatever the cost or type of building. Check the regulator's page on the day for the licence that fits your role.

What is a qualified supervisor certificate?

It is one of the NSW electrical authorities. Building Commission NSW lists it alongside contractor licences and the provisional tradesperson certificate, and it authorises a person to do electrical wiring work without supervision. Employers often ask for it for employed electricians.

How long does a NSW electrical licence last?

Licences and certificates can be issued for 1, 3 or 5 years, except the provisional tradesperson certificate, which is issued for 3 years and cannot be renewed.

Can a Victorian or Queensland electrician work in Sydney?

Some can apply under the East Coast Electrician's scheme, which lists the licence types. If you move your main home to NSW you need a NSW licence. Check the scheme page before you accept work.

Can an apprentice do electrical work in NSW?

Yes, under the Supervision Practice Standard. Only a licensed electrician can supervise, and the ratio depends on the supervision level the apprentice's experience and the task call for.
