What to know

What to know before you apply in Melbourne

What does the Victorian A Grade electrician's licence allow?

Energy Safe Victoria says the Electrician's licence (A Grade) lets you perform electrical installation work in Victoria without supervision, as an employee. It does not let you contract for electrical installation work for profit or reward. For that, the business must be a Registered Electrical Contractor. Victoria also has a lower Electrician (Supervised) licence and a Supervised Worker's licence, which are stepping stones for people who have not yet reached A Grade. When you read a Melbourne job ad, the phrase A Grade or licensed electrician normally means the full licence, and ES or supervised wording means the lower one.

What is the route from apprentice to licensed electrician in Victoria?

For the apprentice pathway Energy Safe asks for a Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or an equal certification, a completed four-year contract of training, at least 12 months of electrical installation work with written confirmation from your employer, a completion letter from the Victorian Registrations and Qualifications Authority, and the Licensed Electrician's Assessment. The assessment has three parts, Safe Working Practice, the Licensed Electrician's Practical and the Licensed Electrician's Theory, and it must be completed within five years of your application. Applications are made through the ESVConnect online system. Victorian apprentices work under supervision by A Grade electricians for at least four years.

How do Registered Electrical Contractors and employers of electrical workers differ?

A business that employs electricians to carry out electrical installation work for profit must register as a REC. Registration needs both a technical supervisor and a business supervisor and can run for up to five years. A different category exists for organisations that employ licensed electrical workers only to maintain their own sites, such as a manufacturer looking after its factory or a property owner looking after its buildings. Those employers can register free of charge to buy Certificates of Electrical Safety, but they must not offer electrical contracting to others. The difference matters when you choose a job, because a contractor and an in-house maintenance employer run different kinds of work.

How does interstate and overseas recognition work for Melbourne electricians?

Victoria joined Automatic Mutual Recognition on 1 July 2021. Electrical workers licensed in the other states and territories, except Queensland, may work in Victoria under their home licence if their main home is in that jurisdiction and they first notify Energy Safe. A Queensland holder of a licence equivalent to the A Grade can work under a Victorian exemption after notifying, and other Queensland licence holders must apply for a Victorian licence under mutual recognition. For overseas-trained electricians Energy Safe asks for an Offshore Technical Skills Record or, for citizens, an Australian Technical Competency Statement, the Australian context gap training and a Certificate III. Applicants then hold a Supervised Worker's licence, pass the Licensed Electrician's Theory and Practical assessments at 75 percent or higher and complete 12 months of installation work. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
