What to know

What to know before you apply in Brisbane

Which Queensland electrical licence class fits which job?

Queensland's Office of Industrial Relations lists six classes. An electrical mechanic holds the open licence and can do all electrical work, including installing wiring and repairing any electrical equipment. An electrical linesperson works on overhead electric lines, street lighting and line testing. An electrical fitter builds switchboards and repairs motors and other equipment, and an electrical jointer handles limited specialist cable jointing and terminating. A restricted electrical work licence limits a person to electrical work tied to another trade, such as refrigeration and air-conditioning or instrumentation, and an electrical work training permit allows supervised work while someone trains. Brisbane job ads normally say electrical mechanic or licensed electrician for the open class.

What do the Queensland rules say about unlicensed work and contractors?

The regulator says it is illegal to do electrical work in Queensland without a licence, with only a few unlicensed tasks allowed, such as authorised testing of electrical equipment, installing or repairing telecommunication cables, electrical work done as a practising electrical engineer and learning the work as an apprentice or trainee. A business that carries out electrical work for others must hold an electrical contractor licence. That licence is issued for one year and needs at least one qualified technical person and one qualified business person, who can be the same individual. The policy must include public and products liability of at least $5,000,000 and consumer protection insurance of at least $50,000, and the portal needs a Digital ID unless you arrange an alternative with the office.

How do Queensland apprentices become licensed, and what limits apply?

When an apprentice finishes, the registered training organisation sends the completion statement to the Electrical Safety Office, because the apprentice cannot submit it. The applicant confirms that resuscitation training was done in the last twelve months, and a linesperson also confirms pole-top or transmission tower rescue training. The Electrical Safety Regulation 2026 limits what training persons can do. In the first six months of an apprenticeship the apprentice must not work near a live high voltage exposed part or where there is a risk of contact with a live low voltage exposed part, and must be supervised at all times by an appropriately licensed electrical worker. Employers must make sure supervisors are properly licensed, qualified and experienced in the work they supervise.

What applies to interstate and overseas electricians moving to Brisbane?

A current interstate or New Zealand electrical work licence can be used to apply for a Queensland licence under the Mutual Recognition (Queensland) Act 1992 or the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (Queensland) Act 2003, and an application fee applies. Queensland is the one jurisdiction left out of Victoria's Automatic Mutual Recognition for most licences, so a Brisbane electrician moving south should read the Energy Safe Victoria page. Overseas-trained applicants need a Trades Recognition Australia Offshore Technical Skills Record, which leads to an electrical work training permit, Australian minimum gap training with a registered training organisation and resuscitation and rescue training before a licence can be issued.
