What to know

What to know before you apply in Perth

How does Western Australia license electricians?

Building and Energy oversees the electrical, gas, plumbing and building services industries in Western Australia, and the Director of Energy Safety is named as the statutory electricity and gas safety regulator, which covers worker and contractor licensing. Building and Energy also supports the Electrical Licensing Board. The state's licence and registration search says the law requires all electrical work to be done by a person who holds the relevant electrical licence, and that licensed electrical contractors must employ licensed electricians. The Electrician's licence guide covers training licences, licences after an apprenticeship, contractor licences, restricted licences, permits, in-house installing work, gap training and an upgrade from a fitting-work-only licence to a full licence.

What is the WA electrician's training licence?

An Electrician's Training Licence lets apprentices and trainees legally perform electrical work under supervision while they train. It is valid for six years, and from 1 July 2026 someone who completes a pre-apprenticeship and moves on to an apprenticeship does not need to apply again. Before applying, the apprentice reads the safe working guidelines and sits a written test run by the employer, which needs a score of at least 80 percent, then completes a safety assessment report. An applicant also uploads proof of identity and a police check dated within the last three months. That employer-run test makes the WA apprentice process different from the other states covered by our guides.

How do Perth apprentices get a full licence?

A WA apprentice applies for a full or restricted electrician's licence once the apprenticeship is complete. The documents are the trade certificate, the Certificate III issued within the last two years and the record of results, plus proof of identity and a police check within the last three months. The guide separates the Electrical Mechanic apprenticeship, the Engineering Tradesperson (Electrical) apprenticeship and the Electrical Fitting apprenticeship, which leads to a fitting-work-only licence. The government notes that you can keep working on your electrician's training licence for up to three months after the training contract ends, so the timing of the application matters.

Which award covers a Perth electrician, and what about interstate or overseas workers?

Western Australia has two industrial systems. The state Electrical Contracting Industry Award applies to sole traders, unincorporated partnerships and similar employers in the state system, while Pty Ltd businesses are in the national system, where the Electrical, Electronic and Communications Contracting Award applies. Ask your employer which one covers your job. For licences, the state lists a mutual recognition route for NSW, Victorian, South Australian, Northern Territory, Queensland, Tasmanian and New Zealand licences. Overseas-trained electricians need an Offshore Technical Skills Record or a Technical Skill Assessment Record endorsed Electrician (General), an Electrical Workers permit, at least 12 months of supervised work and gap training completed within two years. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
