Electrician jobs in South Australia, including Adelaide

Electrician jobs in South Australia need an electrical worker registration from Consumer and Business Services, and anyone contracting for electrical work also needs a contractor's licence. The Plumbers, Gas Fitters and Electricians Act 1995 sets the rules, and the Office of the Technical Regulator answers questions about electronic certificates of compliance. How does South Australia register electricians and contractors?

South Australia splits the work in two. A person who runs a business that carries out or organises electrical work must hold an electrical, or a building work, contractor's licence. A person who does the physical trade work must also register as an electrician, and even a contractor still needs that worker registration to perform the work. Registrations are photo cards, and apprentices need one as well. Consumer and Business Services contacts an apprentice as soon as the training contract is approved, asks for a licence photo and 100 points of ID, and posts the card at no fee. The state says that if you are not registered, both you and your employer can face significant penalties.

Which qualifications does CBS accept for electrical registration?

CBS's March 2025 qualification guidelines explain that, for a trade licence from 1 January 2016, an applicant needs an Australian-based trade apprenticeship in a licensed trade with an eligible Certificate III, which means four years on the job training, or an eligible Certificate III issued on or before 31 December 2015. For any electrical work, the options include an electrician trade certificate issued on or after 1 January 2016 or the interstate equivalent, UEE30811 or UEE30820 gained through the Offshore Technical Skills Record program, and an older Trades Recognition Australia certificate combined with a wiring rules refresher. A National Police Certificate no more than 12 months old is required unless an exemption applies. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

What is a National Restricted Electrical Licence, and who needs a contractor's licence?

The National Restricted Electrical Licence covers disconnecting and reconnecting existing fixed wired equipment connected to a supply of up to 1000 volts while keeping the working environment safe. The registration does not allow maintenance, fault finding, installation, rewiring or alterations. A contractor's licence requires the right experience and qualifications and at least $10,000 in net assets, otherwise a restricted licence as a subcontractor may be available. Licence holders must put their licence number in advertising, including websites, business cards and trade vehicles. Electrical work must be certified through an electronic certificate of compliance, which is managed through the Office of the Technical Regulator, so experience with that system helps when you apply.

How do interstate electricians work in South Australia?

CBS's information for interstate workers says that if your principal place of residence is in another state or territory, you can use Automatic Mutual Recognition to work in South Australia under your interstate licence. If your principal residence changes to South Australia you must hold a South Australian licence, which you can apply for under the mutual recognition process. Licences granted that way appear on the SA Licensing Register so the public can verify them. Contracting for electrical work in South Australia needs a contractor's licence or an interstate equivalent, and the electrical worker registration must be an SA registration or an interstate equivalent. The factsheet also sets out statutory warranties, with claims possible for up to five years after the work and defective electrical work covered for ten years.
