Position Purpose

The primary purpose of the Qualified Electrician is to lead the installation, integration, and maintenance of complex electrical systems in remote and off-grid environments. This role is responsible for the seamless operation of hybrid power solutions, including solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and backup diesel generators. The position ensures that all remote infrastructure is robust, reliable, and compliant with Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000, 5033, and 5139), minimising system downtime in locations where external technical support is limited.

1. Remote Site Preparation & Logistics

  • Self-Sufficient Planning: Preparing all necessary tools, spare parts, and consumables before deployment to ensure the project can be completed without returning to base
  • Site Surveys: Conducting initial assessments of remote terrain to determine the optimal placement for solar arrays and heavy equipment like generators and battery enclosures
  • Safety Risk Assessments: Performing "Pre-start" meetings and site inductions to identify unique remote hazards such as extreme heat, wildlife, or lack of immediate emergency services

2. Hybrid Power System Installation

  • Solar PV Arrays: Installing and wiring photovoltaic modules, including the assembly of mounting structures and managing high-voltage DC cabling
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS): Configuring and installing large-scale battery banks, ensuring correct integration with the Battery Management System (BMS) and thermal protections
  • Generator Integration: Installing and synchronising backup diesel generators with the solar/battery system to provide a seamless "failover" power supply if renewable generation is low

3. Commissioning & Programming

  • System Balancing: Programming hybrid inverters to manage the energy flow between the solar panels (charging), the batteries (storage), and the generator (backup)
  • Testing & Compliance: Conducting insulation resistance, earth continuity, and string testing to ensure the installation meets Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3000, 5033, and 5139)
  • Remote Monitoring Setup: Configuring SCADA or web-based portals to allow for off-site performance tracking and alarm monitoring

4. Maintenance & Fault Finding

  • Complex Diagnostics: Independently identifying and repairing faults in complex microgrids where there is no grid connection to "fall back" on
  • Preventative Maintenance: Performing routine checks on generator oil/filters, cleaning solar arrays for maximum efficiency, and testing battery health/capacity
  • Emergency Repairs: Responding to system alarms and executing rapid repairs to faulty equipment to restore power to critical remote infrastructure

5. Safety & Quality Leadership

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring all work is recorded correctly for handover and meets all state-specific licensing and electrical safety legislation
  • Mentorship: Overseeing apprentices or trade assistants on-site, ensuring they follow Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS) during high-risk activities like working at heights

Required Qualities

  • Willingness to learn electrical principles, solar systems, battery storage, and general setups
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and ask questions when unsure
  • Strong interest in renewable energy and electrical work
  • Ability to use basic hand tools safely and confidently
  • Commitment to completing TAFE Studies and weekly profiling requirements
  • Strong awareness of safety and willingness to follow WHS Procedures at all times
  • Reliable, punctual, and consistent in attendance and effort
  • Strong work ethic with a willingness to learn and take on new tasks

Desired Competencies

  • Basic understanding of electrical circuits, voltage, current, and safety principles
  • Familiarity with solar PV systems or renewable energy concepts
  • Early exposure to hand tools, power tools, or construction environments
  • Ability to read simple diagrams or follow technical instructions
  • Basic computer literacy for completing profiling and TAFE Work

Qualifications

  • Completion of Year 10 (minimum)
  • Ability to meet TAFE entry requirements for the Electrotechnology apprenticeship
  • White Card (or willingness to obtain before starting)
  • Drivers licence (or working towards one)

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to use basic hand tools and power tools safely
  • Understanding of basic electrical concepts (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Ability to follow instructions related to electrical safety and risk control
  • Strong time management and the ability to stay on task
  • Reliability in attendance, punctuality, and job preparation

Personal Attributes

  • Attention to detail
  • Positive attitude
  • Eager to learn
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Honest and respectful
  • Safety Focused
  • Hard working and resilient
  • Takes pride in workmanship
