What to know

What to know before you apply in Melbourne

What does the work look like in Melbourne?

Greater Melbourne is the biggest care labour market in the state, with providers based in the south-east around Dandenong and Cranbourne, in the north around Craigieburn and Epping, in the west around Werribee and Sunshine, and on the Mornington Peninsula. Shared accommodation houses roster across the week, and community access teams run programs during the day. Many support workers combine a few participants, which is why split shifts and travel between homes come up in interviews. Participants often want help with study, work experience and public transport training, so patience and clear notes are part of the job.

Which checks apply in Victoria?

Victoria takes a no clearance, no start approach to the NDIS Check: a person cannot be employed or otherwise engaged by a registered NDIS provider in a risk assessed role without an NDIS Clearance or a transitional arrangement. Applications are made through Service Victoria, and the fee on the day we read the page was $139.20. The NDIS Check does not replace the Victorian Working with Children Check, so a worker who also works with children needs to keep their WWC Clearance current. Check the current steps on the Victorian Government pages.

What are broken shifts and how do they affect pay?

Split shifts are common in Melbourne's home support. Under clause 25.6 of the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award an employer can roster a broken shift of two periods with one unpaid break, and the worker must be paid a broken shift allowance of 1.7% of the standard rate, which was $21.81 for pay periods from 1 July 2026 on the day we read the award. A broken shift with two unpaid breaks needs agreement each time. Check Fair Work for the latest figure.

What do the local numbers say?

Greater Melbourne had 4,917,750 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 37. 256,199 people, 10.5% of employed residents, worked as community and personal service workers, against 11.0% across Victoria. The five biggest industries include hospitals (4.3%) and other social assistance services (1.9%). Geelong and Ballarat have their own pages because their numbers and job markets differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does no clearance, no start mean in Victoria?

A registered NDIS provider cannot engage a person in a risk assessed role until they hold an NDIS Clearance, or are covered by a transitional arrangement. Apply early.

Do I need a Working with Children Check as well?

The Victorian Government says the NDIS Check does not replace the Working with Children Check. If your role involves child-related work you may need both.

How long does an NDIS Clearance last?

The Victorian page says five years, valid across Australia unless surrendered or revoked, with renewal possible from 90 days before expiry.

What is a broken shift?

A shift split into periods with an unpaid break between them. The award requires an allowance for broken shifts in disability and home care work.

Can I work in disability support in Melbourne while studying?

Many people take part-time or casual shifts while studying. Tell the provider your availability, and check your work rights if you are not a citizen or permanent resident. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.
