What to know

What to know before you apply in Perth

What does disability support work look like in Perth?

Greater Perth is spread along a long coastal strip, so a lot of the work is shaped by travel. Community access workers take participants to day programs, sport and shopping, often in the northern suburbs around Joondalup and Wanneroo or in the south around Rockingham and Mandurah. In-home support in places such as Armadale, Midland and Cannington is usually booked in blocks of a few hours, so many support workers combine several participants in a week. Supported independent living houses roster around breakfast, evening and overnight routines. A driver licence and a reliable car are often listed, because public transport does not reach every participant's address.

Which checks apply in Western Australia?

People who work in risk assessed roles for registered NDIS providers must hold an NDIS Check clearance, and the Screening Unit sits within the Department of Communities. The WA page says it is an offence to work without a valid clearance or without having applied for one. A worker can start on application if the identity check is complete, the employer has verified them, nothing has been withdrawn and there is no earlier exclusion or interim bar. The fee listed for a paid employee on the day we read it was $145, and a clearance lasts five years. A separate Working with Children Check applies if the role involves children.

What does the award say about casual and weekend shifts?

Most support workers are covered by the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award unless an enterprise agreement applies. A casual employee is paid 1/38th of the weekly rate for each hour plus a 25% loading. Clause 26.4 sets casual weekend pay at 175% of the ordinary rate on Saturday and 225% on Sunday, inclusive of the loading. Part-time and casual staff doing disability services work must be paid for at least two hours of each shift or each period of a broken shift. Rates change each year, so check Fair Work for the latest figures.

What do the local numbers say?

At the 2021 Census Greater Perth had 2,116,647 residents. 127,252 people, 12.0% of employed residents, worked as community and personal service workers, against 11.8% across Western Australia. The ABS lists hospitals, iron ore mining and primary education among the five biggest industries of employment, so mining and schools are large employers alongside care. The median age was 37. These figures describe the area, not CrossNation vacancies.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an NDIS Check to be a support worker in Perth?

If you work in a risk assessed role for a registered NDIS provider, yes. The provider decides which roles are risk assessed. Apply through the Screening Unit in the Department of Communities and ask the provider to verify your application.

Can I start before my WA NDIS Check is finished?

The Western Australian page allows work on application if your identity has been verified, your employer has verified you, you have no earlier exclusion and no interim bar has been issued. Confirm the current conditions with the Screening Unit before you accept a roster.

Is a Working with Children Check the same thing?

No. The Working with Children Check is a separate Western Australian scheme for child-related work. A role that supports children with disability may need both.

Do I need a car for disability support work in Perth?

Many roles ask for a licence and a car because participants live across a wide metropolitan area. Supported independent living roles based at one house may not.

What qualification do Perth providers ask for?

Many providers list a Certificate III in Individual Support with a disability specialisation, and some accept experience and train the right person. Read the position description for the provider you want to join.

Are there disability support worker jobs in Perth listed with CrossNation today?
