What to know

What to know before you apply in Brisbane

What does the work look like across Greater Brisbane?

Greater Brisbane stretches from Caboolture and Redcliffe in the north to Logan in the south and Ipswich in the west, so where a participant lives shapes the job. Support workers in Logan and Ipswich often work in-home or in shared houses, while Moreton Bay roles include community access trips to the bayside. Overnight roles are common in shared accommodation. Some providers ask for a driver licence because participants may need lifts to appointments and programs. Casual weekend and evening shifts are a usual way to start, and the award's penalty rates make those hours worth asking about.

Which checks apply in Queensland?

Queensland's disability worker screening system started on 1 February 2021. A worker who already holds a valid NDIS worker screening clearance from another state or territory does not need to reapply in Queensland. A disability worker who supports both children and adults needs a disability worker screening clearance and a blue card, and the two can be applied for together in a combined application. Sole traders who are registered NDIS providers in risk assessed roles must hold a clearance before starting, under a no card, no start approach. Renewal opens up to 90 days before expiry. The Queensland fees page, read on 6 October 2026 and current as of 1 July 2026, lists $161.30 for an NDIS clearance for a paid worker and $176.30 when it is combined with a blue card, both valid for five years, and no fee for volunteers.

How are sleepovers paid under the award?

Sleepover shifts are common in Brisbane's shared homes. Clause 25.7 of the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award defines a sleepover as a requirement to sleep overnight at the client's premises, with a continuous span of eight hours. The employee gets a separate room with a bed and clean linen, and a sleepover allowance of 4.9% of the standard rate for each night. Work during the sleepover is paid at the overtime rate with a minimum payment as for one hour. Check Fair Work for the latest dollar figures. Fair Work award MA000100, clause 25.7, read 6 October 2026.

What do the local numbers say?

Greater Brisbane had 2,526,238 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 36. 144,697 people, 11.6% of employed residents, worked as community and personal service workers, against 12.3% across Queensland. Other social assistance services (2.2%) is one of the five biggest industries of employment, next to hospitals (5.1%) and primary education. Those are area figures, not CrossNation vacancies.
