What to know

What to know before you apply in Adelaide

What is disability support work like in Adelaide?

Adelaide is compact compared with other capitals, so a support worker can often cover several suburbs in a day without long drives. Work in the northern suburbs around Salisbury and Elizabeth tends to be in-home and community based, while the south around Marion, Noarlunga and Aldinga adds participants who live further apart. Mount Barker and the Adelaide Hills bring longer trips between homes. Shared living houses roster morning and evening shifts, and respite services look for people who can cover weekends. Many participants want help to get to study, volunteering or sport, so patience and planning matter as much as personal care.

Which checks apply in South Australia?

The Screening Unit runs South Australian NDIS Worker Checks and lets applicants verify their identity with the Australian Government Digital ID System instead of logging in to Screening SA. The SA Government states that workers of registered NDIS providers who are not in a risk assessed role do not need a check, although a provider may still ask for one. Separately, the SA Government publishes Working with Children Check obligations for organisations. Ask the provider which of the two your role needs. The SA.GOV.AU application page, read on 6 October 2026, lists a fee of $145 for employees and no fee for volunteers.

How are short shifts paid under the award?

Short visits are common in home support, so the minimum payment rule matters. Clause 10.5 of the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award says part-time and casual employees doing disability services work must be paid for at least two hours for each shift or each period of work in a broken shift. For social and community services employees outside disability work the minimum is three hours. Ask a provider how it rosters visits, whether you are engaged as part-time or casual, and which level you start on.

What do the local numbers say?

Greater Adelaide had 1,387,290 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 39. 13.2% of employed residents, 88,320 people, worked as community and personal service workers. The ABS lists aged care residential services (3.2%) and other social assistance services (2.6%) among the five biggest industries, which means care employers in Adelaide draw on a workforce that also covers aged care. Some providers run both services.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do all disability support workers in Adelaide need an NDIS Worker Check?

No. Workers in risk assessed roles with registered NDIS providers do. The SA Government states that other workers of registered providers do not need one, though the provider may still ask.

How do I apply for the South Australian check?

The Screening Unit runs the application. You can prove your identity with a Digital ID account instead of logging in to Screening SA. Check the current steps on the SA.GOV.AU page.

Is the SA Working with Children Check the same as the NDIS check?

No, they are separate. The Working with Children Check is for child-related roles, and the SA Government publishes the obligations for organisations on its Working with Children Check pages.

What is the minimum payment for a short visit?

For part-time and casual employees doing disability services work the award sets a minimum of two hours per shift or per period of a broken shift. Confirm the classification and agreement that apply to you.

Can I do disability support work and aged care in Adelaide?

Many providers offer both, and the Certificate III in Individual Support can lead into either. Each has its own award and screening notes, so read the role description.
