What to know

What to know before you apply in Sydney

What is disability support work like across Sydney?

Greater Sydney is large enough that most support workers choose a part of it and stay there. Work is found in the inner west and eastern suburbs, on the northern beaches and north shore, and in the south around Sutherland and Liverpool. Providers often roster around the time participants leave for day programs and come home, so early mornings and evenings can be busy. Commute times between homes shape which shifts suit you, so say which suburbs you can reach when you register.

How does the NSW NDIS Worker Check work?

The NSW Office of the Children's Guardian runs the NDIS Worker Check. You apply through a MyServiceNSW account, confirm your identity at a Service NSW centre and pay the application fee, which the OCG page listed as $112 for paid workers on the day we read it. Your NDIS employer is then sent an email asking them to verify your application and has 30 days to do it. If the employer does not verify it, the application does not progress. Someone who is not doing or about to start NDIS work cannot apply, so get an offer or a placement first.

What should you ask about pay and rosters?

Most Sydney providers use the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award or an enterprise agreement, and the minimum payment rule in clause 10.5 sets at least two hours per shift for part-time and casual disability services work. Sydney traffic makes travel between visits a cost of time, so ask whether travel between participants is paid, how long each visit is, and whether overnight sleepover shifts are offered. The award's sleepover rules in clause 25.7 set an eight hour span, a separate room and an allowance per night. Check Fair Work for the latest rates. Fair Work award MA000100, clause 25.7, read 6 October 2026.

What do the local numbers say?

Greater Sydney had 5,231,147 residents at the 2021 Census and a median age of 37. 225,062 people, 9.3% of employed residents, worked as community and personal service workers, which is lower than the 10.6% across NSW; banking and computer system design are among the city's largest industries. Other social assistance services employed 48,853 people (2.0%). Western Sydney and Newcastle have their own pages with their own numbers.
