What shapes childcare demand in Greater Brisbane?

Greater Brisbane had 2,526,238 residents at the 2021 Census. 150,503 were aged 0 to 4 (6.0%), 165,679 were aged 5 to 9 (6.6%) and 167,962 were aged 10 to 14 (6.6%), so the two school-age groups were 6.6% and 6.6% of residents against 6.2% and 6.2% for Australia. That matters for outside school hours care and vacation care, which sit next to long day care in many Queensland providers and shape childcare recruitment in Brisbane. Community and personal service workers made up 11.6% of employed residents against 11.5% nationally, and primary education was one of the five biggest employing industries. Census figures count people, not vacancies, so use them to judge the setting rather than the number of roles.

What is the blue card and how does 'no card, no start' work?

Queensland's screening is the blue card. The Queensland Government says you need one to work or volunteer in an education and care service, and that most adults who enter a service while children are there need one even if they do not work directly with children. Early childhood educators and outside school hours care staff are on the list, and so are cleaners, cooks, maintenance workers and tradespeople who work while children are present. Queensland Early Childhood describes a no card, no start rule: paid workers and business operators in regulated child-related environments must have a blue card before they work with children and cannot start while the application is being processed. For a provider, that makes the card the first thing to confirm on any shortlist, before a start date is set.

Which Queensland ratios, teacher rules and qualifications should a brief mention?

Queensland uses one educator to eleven children from 36 months up to and including preschool age, and one to fifteen above preschool age, with one to four under 24 months and one to five from 24 to 36 months. The regulator is the Early Childhood Regulatory Authority in the Department of Education. ACECQA says registration is voluntary for early childhood teachers in NQF settings in Queensland, that some employers require it as a condition of employment, and that legislative amendments under consideration propose a mandatory requirement by 1 July 2028. If your teacher role needs registration with the Queensland College of Teachers, put it in the brief. ACECQA also lists Queensland among the jurisdictions with their own qualification requirements for outside school hours care, so name the approved qualifications you accept for those educators.

What is different about hiring through a childcare agency in Brisbane?

People searching for childcare recruitment agencies Brisbane find relief staffing businesses, job boards and permanent recruiters in the same results. CrossNation is a permanent and contract recruiter: as a childcare recruitment agency in Brisbane it delivers a brief, a shortlist and an offer rather than a daily roster, and its early childhood recruitment covers teachers as well as educators. Say which part of Greater Brisbane the role covers, such as Moreton Bay, Logan, Ipswich or Redland, and whether a family day care or home-based service is involved, because adults who live in a home where family day care is provided need a blue card too. Providers who want overseas educators can brief us for sponsorship-ready overseas candidates; the employer holds or obtains its own approval, and CrossNation cannot promise a visa, an approval or a job. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

What do childcare educator wages cost?

Wages are separate from our fee and follow the Children's Services Award 2010 or an enterprise agreement. The award sets a level 3 qualified educator (approved certificate III) at $1,233.90 a week ($32.47 an hour) and a level 5 advanced educator at $1,389.50 a week ($36.57 an hour) for full-time employees from 1 July 2026, and superannuation is paid on top at 12%. These are award minimums, the same in every state. Check Fair Work for the latest rates.

How to choose a childcare recruitment agency in Australia

These checks work for any agency. Each one is something you can ask for or verify before you send a brief.

  1. Fee basis in writing

Ask for the percentage, what it is charged on and the event that makes the fee payable, in writing, before you send a brief.

CrossNation: CrossNation's fee is 12% for roles under $50k, 15% for $50k–$90k, 18% above $90k, 20% executive, charged on first-year remuneration (salary plus super), plus GST, and only when a placement succeeds.

  2. Guarantee terms in writing

Ask for the guarantee period and how it applies in the agreement you sign, not only on the agency's website.

CrossNation: CrossNation placements carry a 90-day replacement guarantee (replacement, not refund), subject to our agreement. See our terms.

  3. How candidates are screened

Ask what the agency checks before it shortlists a candidate, and what record it keeps, such as qualifications, registration or licence status and work rights, so you can verify each one yourself.

CrossNation: CrossNation records each candidate's qualifications, registration or licence status and work rights so employers can verify them.

  4. Migration agent involvement

If you are considering an overseas hire, ask who gives visa advice. Only a registered migration agent can give migration advice, and the register of migration agents is public (https://www.mara.gov.au/). This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

CrossNation: CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent. The employer holds or obtains its own approval.

  5. References

Ask for referee details for a candidate you are shortlisting, call the referees yourself, and ask the agency how it checks references and what it passes on to you.

  6. Qualification evidence you can check

Ask which qualification the agency records for each educator and check it against the ACECQA approved lists, or confirm the person is actively working towards one.

CrossNation: CrossNation records each candidate's qualification so you can check it against the ACECQA lists.

  7. Working with Children Check or blue card status

Ask how the agency records each candidate's Working with Children Check or blue card, and confirm it with the state or territory screening body before the first shift, because the scheme and its name differ by state.

CrossNation: CrossNation records what candidates tell us they hold against your list. It does not issue or verify checks.

Questions from employers in Brisbane

Are you one of the childcare recruitment agencies in Brisbane?

CrossNation is a childcare recruitment agency registered in Mildura, Victoria (VIC 3500) that recruits for Brisbane and Queensland providers. We do not run a Brisbane site. We recruit permanent and contract educators and teachers against a brief.

Can an educator start before their blue card arrives?

No. Queensland Early Childhood describes a no card, no start rule for regulated child-related environments: paid workers cannot start working with children while the application is being processed.

Does a cook or cleaner at a childcare centre need a blue card too?

The Queensland Government lists cleaners, cooks and maintenance workers among the adults entering an education and care service while children are there who need one.

Do early childhood teachers need registration in Queensland?

ACECQA says registration is voluntary for early childhood teachers in NQF settings, although some employers require it, so read the position description before you shortlist.

What do recruitment agencies in Brisbane charge?

Our fee is 12% for roles under $50k, 15% for $50k–$90k, 18% above $90k, 20% executive, charged on first-year remuneration (salary plus super), plus GST, with a 90-day replacement guarantee (replacement, not refund), subject to our agreement. Other recruitment agencies set their own fees, so ask each one how it is calculated and when it is charged.

How long does it take to recruit childcare educators through CrossNation?

It depends on the candidate and on bodies CrossNation does not control, such as registration boards, licensing regulators and the Department of Home Affairs, so CrossNation does not give a timeline. For childcare, those steps can include qualification assessment by ACECQA. Many employers ask for both onshore and overseas candidates so an urgent vacancy is not held up.

What are an employer's responsibilities when sponsoring overseas childcare educators?

The Department of Home Affairs says a standard business sponsor has obligations to meet while it sponsors someone. They include telling the department in writing when certain events occur, such as the sponsored person ceasing employment or a change in their duties, making sure the person works only in the occupation nominated, giving terms and conditions of employment that are not less favourable than those of an equivalent Australian worker, keeping records, and cooperating with inspectors. The sponsor must also pay the costs of the recruitment process itself, including recruitment agent fees, and must not charge them to the sponsored worker. A sponsor that does not meet its obligations can face sanctions. The employer is the sponsor. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, does not sponsor and cannot promise a visa or an approval. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

What happens if a childcare educator placed through CrossNation leaves?

Placements carry a 90-day replacement guarantee (replacement, not refund), subject to our agreement. How it applies is set out in the agreement between CrossNation and the employer, so ask for the guarantee terms in writing before you sign. See our terms at https://crossnation.com.au/terms. The guarantee is not a promise of any offer, visa or migration outcome.
