How does hospitality sit in the Adelaide employer base?

Greater Adelaide had 1,387,290 residents at the 2021 Census. Hospitals employed 5.3% of employed residents, and cafes and restaurants came fifth at 2.3% against 2.2% across Australia. Median weekly household income was $1,548, below the Australian figure of $1,746, and the median age was 39. These figures count residents, not venues or vacancies. For hospitality recruitment in South Australia, a brief can cover venues from the Adelaide CBD and Norwood to the Barossa, the Fleurieu Peninsula and the Riverland, and a precise statement of hours and pay matters more than volume.

What does South Australia require for staff who serve alcohol?

The SA Government says the licensee must ensure that all staff, including volunteers, who sell, offer for sale or serve liquor have completed approved responsible service of alcohol training, and that all security personnel working at the licensed premises have done so as well. A few licence types are exempt, such as some production and direct-sales licences and short term licences, and the Liquor and Gambling Commissioner can direct any person who sells or serves liquor to complete accredited training within a set period. Ask each Adelaide candidate for their certificate before an offer, and tell us in the brief if the role involves supervising other staff.

Which South Australian and national obligations should an Adelaide venue plan for?

If you run a business in South Australia that employs workers, it is likely you will need to register with ReturnToWorkSA for work injury insurance, although businesses below a total remuneration threshold are exempt, and employers register for payroll tax with Revenue SA. Food safety is national: food service businesses in the first two categories must appoint a certified food safety supervisor, with a certificate from the past five years, before handling unpackaged high-risk food, so some kitchens ask a senior cook to hold it. The awards are national too, and they apply in Adelaide as everywhere else.

Is this the right place for hospitality agency work in Adelaide?

Hospitality recruitment agencies in Adelaide range from shift suppliers to permanent recruiters, and some people who search for hospitality recruitment Adelaide are looking for a job, not a hire. If that is you, register with CrossNation and upload your CV on our jobs pages; a listing is not a job offer and we cannot promise a role. Venues should use the enquiry form, which asks for the role, the location, the roster and the start date. CrossNation recruits permanent and contract roles, from commis chefs to venue managers, and does not supply casual staff by the shift. Venues that want overseas chefs or cooks can brief us for sponsorship-ready overseas candidates; the employer holds or obtains its own approval, and CrossNation cannot promise a visa, an approval or a job. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

Questions from employers in Adelaide

Are you a hospitality recruitment agency in Adelaide?

CrossNation is a hospitality recruitment agency registered in Mildura, Victoria (VIC 3500) that recruits for Adelaide and South Australian venues. We do not run an Adelaide site. We recruit permanent and contract roles against a brief.

Do volunteers in South Australian licensed venues need RSA training too?

The SA Government says the licensee must ensure all staff, including volunteers, who sell, offer for sale or serve liquor have completed approved responsible service of alcohol training, subject to the exemptions it lists.

Do Adelaide venues need to register with ReturnToWorkSA?

It is likely for a business that employs workers in South Australia, but businesses below a remuneration threshold are exempt. The SA Government's employer obligations page explains the rules.

What do recruitment agencies in Adelaide charge?

Our fee is 12% for roles under $50k, 15% for $50k–$90k, 18% above $90k, 20% executive, charged on first-year remuneration (salary plus super), plus GST, with a 90-day replacement guarantee (replacement, not refund), subject to our agreement. Other recruitment agencies set their own fees, so ask each one how it is calculated and when it is charged.

How long does it take to recruit hospitality staff through CrossNation?

It depends on the candidate and on bodies CrossNation does not control, such as registration boards, licensing regulators and the Department of Home Affairs, so CrossNation does not give a timeline. Many employers ask for both onshore and overseas candidates so an urgent vacancy is not held up.

What are an employer's responsibilities when sponsoring overseas hospitality staff?

The Department of Home Affairs says a standard business sponsor has obligations to meet while it sponsors someone. They include telling the department in writing when certain events occur, such as the sponsored person ceasing employment or a change in their duties, making sure the person works only in the occupation nominated, giving terms and conditions of employment that are not less favourable than those of an equivalent Australian worker, keeping records, and cooperating with inspectors. The sponsor must also pay the costs of the recruitment process itself, including recruitment agent fees, and must not charge them to the sponsored worker. A sponsor that does not meet its obligations can face sanctions. The employer is the sponsor. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, does not sponsor and cannot promise a visa or an approval. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

What happens if a hospitality worker placed through CrossNation leaves?

Placements carry a 90-day replacement guarantee (replacement, not refund), subject to our agreement. How it applies is set out in the agreement between CrossNation and the employer, so ask for the guarantee terms in writing before you sign. See our terms at https://crossnation.com.au/terms. The guarantee is not a promise of any offer, visa or migration outcome.
