Plumber jobs in Australia

Plumbers install and repair water, drainage, gas and roofing systems in homes, commercial buildings and industrial sites. Plumbing is licensed by each state and territory, and apprentices work under supervision. The usual pathway is an apprenticeship towards a Certificate III in Plumbing, and pay is often set by the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award or an agreement.

Do plumbers need a licence in Australia?

Yes. Plumbing, drainage and gasfitting are regulated by state and territory laws, and each has its own regulator and licence classes, so the name and scope of a licence differ between, for example, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. In general you need the right licence or registration to carry out plumbing work independently, while apprentices and trainees work under a licensed plumber. A licence from one state may be recognised in another, but you should check the new regulator's process before starting work. Plumbing contractors who run a business need a separate contractor licence. ABLIS lists the licences and regulators for each jurisdiction.

What kinds of plumbing work are available?

New-build residential plumbing is pipework, drainage and fixture fit-off on a building program, often on a site with other trades. Maintenance and service plumbers go from job to job fixing leaks, blocked drains, hot water systems and burst pipes, and may be on call. Commercial and hydraulic plumbing covers larger buildings, with complex drainage, pumps and fire services. Gasfitting and roof plumbing (gutters, downpipes and roof drainage) are specialities that may need their own licence class. Employers look for which of these you have done most, so describe the type of jobs, the size of the sites and whether you can read plans.

Which award covers plumbers, and what else do sites ask for?

Plumbers employed by plumbing contractors are generally covered by the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award [MA000036], which sets minimum rates by classification, overtime, allowances and leave. Large construction companies often have enterprise agreements with their own rates. Building sites also expect a general construction induction card (white card), a current driver licence and your own tools. We do not quote pay figures, as they depend on the instrument, classification and site. Ask which award or agreement applies, then check the minimum with the Fair Work Pay Calculator.

Registration and award

Registration: State or territory plumbing regulator (for example the Victorian Building Authority). A plumbing licence or registration from the state or territory where you work is needed to carry out plumbing work independently. ABLIS lists the licences for each jurisdiction.

Pay and conditions: usually the Plumbing and Fire Sprinklers Award [MA000036] or an enterprise agreement. Check current minimum rates with the Fair Work Pay Calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my plumbing licence in another state?

Often, through recognition arrangements, but the rules and classes differ by state. Contact the plumbing regulator in the new state before you start work and ask what you need to apply for.

Is a gasfitter the same as a plumber?

Gasfitting is a specialty with its own licence class in many states. Some plumbers hold both, and some roles only need one. Check the job ad for the licences it lists.

Do I need a white card as a plumber?

If you work on a construction site, yes, you need the general construction induction card. Service plumbers who only visit homes may not be asked for it, but new-build and commercial employers usually are.

Can CrossNation sponsor an overseas plumber?

No. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent, so we cannot sponsor you, give visa advice or promise a job. Trade skills assessment and state plumbing licensing are separate from any visa. This is general information, not migration advice; please speak with a registered migration agent.
