What does a boilermaker do that a welder does not?

A boilermaker is a fabrication tradesperson. Beyond welding, you read drawings, mark out plate and sections, cut and roll them, fit the parts together and check the result before and after welding. Work includes structural steel for buildings and bridges, mining equipment and wear plate, tanks and pressure equipment, and repair work in workshops and on site. A welder may focus on the welding process alone, while a boilermaker is expected to fabricate from the drawing. Job ads often combine the words, as in boilermaker welder, so look at whether the role involves marking out and fitting.

What qualifications and site requirements apply?

The standard pathway is an apprenticeship with a Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade. Employers often run a practical fit-up and weld test, and structural work refers to Australian Standards for welding. Site work adds a white card for construction, tickets for working at heights, confined spaces or elevated work platforms, and on mine sites a pre-employment medical, drug and alcohol testing and inductions. Overseas-trained boilermakers may have their trade skills assessed by Trades Recognition Australia. Keep weld certificates, test records and tickets together, as employers ask to see them during shortlisting.

What are shutdown and FIFO boilermaker jobs like?

Shutdown work on mine, processing and industrial sites happens in intense blocks of long shifts, with tight schedules and many trades on site. Fly-in fly-out rosters add travel and accommodation. Before accepting, ask about the roster cycle, shift hours, flights and pick-up, accommodation, medical requirements and which award or agreement sets pay. Boilermakers in workshops are usually covered by the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award [MA000010], while site and shutdown work is often governed by agreements. We do not quote pay figures. Use the Fair Work Pay Calculator once you know the instrument.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is a boilermaker the same as a welder-fabricator?

The trades overlap. Boilermaker emphasises fabrication from drawings in structural and plate work, while welder-fabricator roles can lean towards welding. Read the duties in the ad to see what the employer needs.

Do I have to pass a weld test?

Many employers set a practical test, especially for structural and pressure work. Ask in advance which process, material and position you will be tested on.

What should I ask before taking a shutdown contract?

Ask about length of the shutdown, roster, hours, accommodation and travel, site medical and induction requirements, and which agreement sets pay and allowances.

Can CrossNation sponsor an overseas boilermaker?

No. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent, so we cannot sponsor you, give visa advice or promise a job. A skills assessment from Trades Recognition Australia is separate from any visa. This is general information, not migration advice; please speak with a registered migration agent.
