Civil Labourer jobs in Australia

Civil labourers work on roads, drainage, pipelines, earthworks and concreting. The work is physical and outdoors, and you need a white card to work on a construction site. Employers often add site inductions, a medical and drug test, and tickets such as traffic control. Pay is often set by the Building and Construction General On-site Award or an agreement.

What does a civil labourer do?

Civil construction builds the infrastructure around buildings: roads, drains, water and sewer pipes, kerbs, retaining walls and earthworks. A labourer supports the crew by setting out and levelling, laying pipe, spreading and compacting material, finishing concrete, acting as a spotter around machines and keeping the site tidy. Work is outdoors in heat, cold and rain, and often means early starts. Civil labourers who learn machinery, pipelaying or traffic control often move into operator and supervisor roles. Experience on a similar project and reliability are what employers look for, so describe the type of work and project sizes.

What tickets and documents are needed?

To work on a construction site you need a general construction induction card (white card), which is issued after training with a registered provider. Sites usually add their own induction, PPE including steel-capped boots, a pre-employment medical and drug and alcohol testing. Traffic control work needs a separate state-issued traffic control ticket. Other tickets such as working at heights, confined space entry or elevated work platforms depend on the task, and a current driver licence helps when crews travel between sites. Entry-level roles do not need a trade qualification, but keep your cards and certificates with you.

Which award or agreement sets pay?

Civil and building labourers are commonly covered by the Building and Construction General On-site Award [MA000020] or by an enterprise agreement at a larger contractor, with rules on overtime, allowances and leave. Regional projects may have allowances for travel and accommodation, and wet weather can affect hours. We do not quote pay figures, because they depend on the instrument, your level and the site. Ask which award or agreement applies, which classification you start on and how site allowances and wet weather are handled, and check the minimum with the Fair Work Pay Calculator.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a white card?

Complete the general construction induction unit with a registered training organisation that is approved in your state, then you are issued a card. Ask the training provider about identification and fees.

Can I start as a civil labourer with no experience?

Yes, many contractors hire new labourers who have a white card, boots and a good attitude. Starting on the ground gives you a path to machine or pipelaying roles.

Do civil jobs include accommodation?

Some regional and remote projects do, or pay a living away allowance. Ask what is provided, who pays and what happens if the project ends early.

Can CrossNation sponsor an overseas civil labourer?

No. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent, so we cannot sponsor you, give visa advice or promise a job. A white card is a site safety requirement and is separate from any visa. This is general information, not migration advice; please speak with a registered migration agent.
