What to know

What to know before you apply in Brisbane

What childcare positions are there in Brisbane?

Brisbane's population is spread across a river city and a ring of growth areas, and childcare follows it. The usual settings are long day care, kindergarten programs, home-based services such as family day care, and outside school hours care. Centres are spread from Springfield, Logan and Ipswich to Redcliffe, Caboolture, Sunnybank and Chermside. The 2021 Census shows a bigger share of children aged 5 to 14 in Greater Brisbane than in Australia as a whole, which is the age group outside school hours care serves. ACECQA lists Queensland among the states with their own qualification rules for outside school hours care, so an OSHC educator should check the state requirements rather than assume the long day care rules.

What is the blue card and when do you need it?

The Queensland Government says you need a blue card if you work or volunteer in an education and care service, and that most adults who enter a service while children are there need one, even if they do not work directly with children. Cleaners, cooks and tradespeople are on the same list as educators. Queensland Early Childhood describes a no card, no start rule: paid workers in regulated child-related environments must have a blue card before they work with children and cannot start while the application is processed. When we read the fees page on 6 October 2026 a blue card for paid work was $108.30 and the card for volunteers and students had no fee. The page lists $15.00 for someone who already holds a disability worker screening clearance.

How do Queensland ratios and qualifications work?

Queensland follows the national pattern of one educator to four children from birth to 24 months, one to five from 24 to 36 months, one to eleven from 36 months to preschool age and one to fifteen above it. The regulator is the Early Childhood Regulatory Authority within the Department of Education. ACECQA notes that the Queensland College of Teachers does not require registration for early childhood teachers in NQF settings, although some employers ask for it as a condition of employment, so read the position description. The national rule that at least half of the educators counted hold or work towards a diploma applies here too. Services must also keep at least one person with first aid, anaphylaxis and asthma training on site.

What do the local numbers say?

At the 2021 Census Greater Brisbane had 2,526,238 residents. 150,503 were aged 0 to 4 (6.0%), 165,679 were aged 5 to 9 (6.6%) and 167,962 were aged 10 to 14 (6.6%), against 6.2% and 6.2% for Australia in the two older groups. 11.6% of employed residents worked as community and personal service workers against 12.3% across Queensland. The ABS lists Hospitals (except Psychiatric Hospitals) (5.1%), Supermarket and Grocery Stores (2.4%), Primary Education (2.4%), Takeaway Food Services (2.3%), Other Social Assistance Services (2.2%) among the five biggest industries of employment. These figures describe the area, not CrossNation vacancies.
