Jobs for partner visa holders (subclasses 820 and 309)

Home Affairs says the temporary Partner visa (subclass 820) and the provisional Partner visa (subclass 309) both let you "live, work and study in Australia while we process your permanent Partner visa". Check your own conditions in VEVO, share the result with employers, and look for roles in the sectors below.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for the partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is in Australia on a Partner visa (subclass 820, the onshore temporary visa, or subclass 309, the provisional visa granted offshore) and wants work in aged care, nursing, allied health, disability support, childcare, hospitality or the trades.

What does a partner visa let me do?

On the Home Affairs pages read on 31 October 2026, the subclass 820 visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia temporarily, as the first step towards the permanent Partner visa (subclass 801). The subclass 309 visa is the same first step towards the permanent subclass 100 visa. Both pages say that with the visa you can "live, work and study in Australia while we process your permanent Partner visa". You stay on the temporary visa until the permanent application is finalised or withdrawn. Your own grant is what counts, so check the conditions in VEVO rather than assuming they match someone else's.

How do employers check my work rights?

Home Affairs tells employers to check that a person who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident has a visa with work entitlements, either by asking the person to email their current visa details from VEVO or by using VEVO with the person's permission. Having your VEVO result ready when you apply saves a step and answers the question before it is asked. Your workplace rights are the same as everyone else's: the Fair Work Ombudsman says visa holders and migrant workers have the same workplace rights and protections as all other employees in Australia.

Which CrossNation roles could suit me?

Partner visa holders work across the sectors we recruit for. The live counts below come from the CrossNation job board; a listing is not a job offer. Roles that need registration, a licence or a screening check still need them, so tell us your qualification and where it is in the registration or assessment process. Tell us also if your partner visa application is still being processed, so we can be clear with employers about which visa you hold today.

Which open roles could suit you?

These counts are live from the CrossNation job board. A listing is not a job offer, and it does not mean the employer sponsors visas. Check that a role fits your work rights before you apply.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I work on a partner visa in Australia?

Home Affairs says the Partner visa (subclass 820) and the Partner (Provisional) visa (subclass 309) let you live, work and study in Australia while your permanent Partner visa is processed. Check your own conditions in VEVO. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

Do I need sponsorship from an employer on a partner visa?

Home Affairs says the sponsor for a partner visa must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, and the evidence shows that you and your sponsor are in a married or de facto relationship. An employer does not sponsor a partner visa. This is general information, not migration advice. Speak to a registered migration agent.

What should I show an employer?

Your VEVO details. Home Affairs tells employers they can ask a visa holder to email their current visa details from VEVO, or check VEVO themselves with the visa holder's permission.

Does CrossNation give advice on partner visas?

No. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent. For questions about your visa or the permanent stage, use Home Affairs or a registered migration agent.

Can CrossNation promise me a job?

No. We match candidates with roles employers ask us to fill, but each employer decides whom to interview and hire.
