What does an enrolled nurse do in Australia?

Enrolled nurses provide hands-on nursing care as part of a team led by registered nurses. Day to day that can include taking and recording observations, wound care, helping with mobility and hygiene, supporting residents or patients at meal times, and noticing and reporting changes in condition. Depending on your education and the employer's policies, you may also administer medicines. The Nursing and Midwifery Board's standards for practice describe the EN as working under the direction and supervision of an RN, who remains accountable for the care they delegate. That does not mean the RN is always in the same room, but you must know who your supervising RN is on every shift. Many ENs work in residential aged care, where the role often bridges the care team and the RN. Others work on hospital wards, in rehabilitation, mental health or day surgery.

How do I become registered as an enrolled nurse?

The usual pathway is a Diploma of Nursing from an NMBA-approved program, followed by an application to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia through Ahpra. Once registered you appear on the public register, which employers check. Registration standards cover English language skills, criminal history, recency of practice, continuing professional development and professional indemnity insurance. Overseas-qualified nurses whose education matches the enrolled nurse level apply through the NMBA process for internationally qualified nurses, and the Board decides whether the qualification is comparable. Some nurses trained overseas find their qualification is assessed at a different level from the one they expected, so read the NMBA guidance before applying for jobs. If you later want to become a registered nurse, many universities give credit for the Diploma of Nursing towards a Bachelor of Nursing, which can shorten the degree.

Which award applies to enrolled nurses?

Enrolled nurses employed in private aged care, private hospitals and many clinics are generally covered by the Nurses Award [MA000034], which has a separate enrolled nurse classification with pay points that increase with experience. The award sets out penalty rates for evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays, along with overtime, allowances and leave. Public sector ENs are usually employed under state or territory agreements, and some private employers have their own enterprise agreements. Make sure an offer names your classification as enrolled nurse rather than assistant in nursing or personal care worker, because the award treats these as different roles with different duties. We do not publish pay figures here. Use the Fair Work Ombudsman's Pay Calculator, or ask the employer for the agreement that covers the role, to check the minimum rate for your pay point.

Frequently asked questions

Can an enrolled nurse give medications?

Many enrolled nurses can, within their education and the employer's policies. Some ENs have a notation on their registration that limits medicine administration. Check your entry on the public register and the employer's medication policy before accepting a role that includes medication rounds.

Is an enrolled nurse the same as an assistant in nursing?

No. An enrolled nurse is registered with the NMBA and holds a nursing qualification, usually a Diploma of Nursing. An assistant in nursing or personal care worker is not registered as a nurse. The duties, accountability and award classification are different, so the titles are not interchangeable.

Do I need aged care experience for EN roles?

It helps but is not always required. Aged care employers value experience with dementia care, wound care and medication rounds. If you are newly registered, mention your clinical placements and any care work you did while studying, because many employers consider recent graduates.

Will CrossNation sponsor an enrolled nurse from overseas?

We cannot. CrossNation is a recruitment agency, not a registered migration agent, so we do not sponsor workers, advise on visas or guarantee job offers. Whether an employer considers an overseas EN is its own decision. This is general information, not migration advice; a registered migration agent can explain visa options.
